Somerhalder made the exciting announcement that he will direct Season 6 Episode 16 on Instagram Thursday.

“Thank you to all involved in the decision-making process for giving me the opportunity to do this,” Somerhalder wrote. “I am so grateful. I’ll do my very verry [sic] very best not to screw it up.”

This will be Somerhalder’s first official directing credit.

Other than the title, “The Downward Spiral,” little is known about what’s in store for the episode. We’re assuming Damon will still be in the plot, like Stefan was still in the episode Wesley directed in Season 5, titled “Resident Evil.”

Though we don’t know what’s in store for the show in Episode 16 this season, we do know what will happen when we return from the holiday break with Episode 11.

According to executive producer, Caroline Dries, who spoke with E! Online, Kai is out to stick it to Damon, which is partly why he kidnapped Elena (Nina Dobrev). But he also has a bigger plan. Dries explained that, “having sucked up all that magic from Mystic Falls has repercussions even for him. He needs Elena’s help with that.”

Dries also promised that the Delena saga will continue when the show returns. And, though Elena has been kidnapped, the two will have a face-to-face soon. More importantly, “their relationship will evolve,” which we’re hoping is Dries’ keyword for, “We’re going to make up for that kiss under the mistletoe you almost got to, but didn’t get to, see in the midseason finale.”
