Sarah Palin sparked controversy after she shared a picture of her 6-year-old son Trig standing on their family’s dog, and now the politician is speaking out about the incident.
Palin took to Facebook on Saturday to shed light on the backlash, and her anger was directed toward People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, better known as PETA.
“Dear PETA, Chill. At least Trig didn’t eat the dog,” Palin began her lengthy open letter to the organization.
The former Alaska governor then went on to blast PETA and its “double standards” as she took aim at Ellen DeGeneres, who once posted a picture similar to Palin’s, and President Barack Obama, who, according to the New York Daily News, once admitted to eating dead dog meat when he was a child in Indonesia.
Palin then commented that neither DeGeneres nor Obama received the same criticism as she has over the picture of her young son standing on top of the family’s black Labrador.

Palin finished her letter by ensuring the world knows her family’s pets are well-taken care of and very loved.
“Our pets, including Trig’s best buddy Jill Hadassah, are loved, spoiled and cared for more than some people care for their fellow man whose politics may not mesh with nonsensical liberally failed ways or don’t fit your flighty standards,” she wrote, adding, “Jill is a precious part of our world. So is Trig.”
According to People magazine, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk released a statement in response to Palin’s rant, in which the organization explains why it believes people should not be stepping on dogs.

“PETA simply believes that people shouldn’t step on dogs, and judging by the reaction that we’ve seen… we’re far from alone in that belief,” Newkirk said. “We have no reason to believe that the Palin companion animals aren’t ordinarily pampered, and we wish the entire family a peaceful and humane 2015.”
