7 Things to know about Ruby Rose before she joins Orange Is the New Black

As if Orange Is the New Black fans aren’t already dying of suspense waiting for the new season, the latest casting news sent the internet into full-on cardiac arrest — the out actress, model and DJ, Ruby Rose, will hit the cells of Litchfield this summer. Here’s what you should know about the Aussie stunner-slash-badass.

1. She has a voice and she’s not afraid to use it

In addition to her other talents, Rose is a performance artist with a unique perspective — she shared it with the world in a short film titled Break Free, which explores her transition from the ultra-feminine to a more hyper-masculine identity.

“I’ve had this reincarnation so many times in my life and I wanted to capture it in a short video for others who relate, because we can try and try and be something that we don’t feel inside, but in the end, only when you listen to your soul and that heart that beats inside of us, can we find happiness and acceptance,” she said of the stirring video.

2. She found fame and love through reality TV

Rose’s ascension to stardom began in 2002 when she joined the Girlfriend model search. She went on to place second to Catherine McNeil, to whom she later became engaged. In 2008, Rose landed a gig as an MTV VJ, which opened up the door to the devoted fandom she enjoys today. Ultimately, she and McNeil decided to go their separate ways.

3. She’s ballsy (and perhaps part camel?)

She came out to her parents at the tender age of 12. She passionately advocates for LGBTQ rights. She competed in a celebrity boxing match for charity.

She even downed 100 shots of beer in 100 minutes against Jackass star, Bam Margera, while competing for the VJ title (we know — how the hell did her cute little body hold it all?!). This girl is divinely gutsy.

4. Tons of tats? Yes, please!

In an interview with Inked, Rose admits she has long since lost count of how many tattoos she currently has. In 2010, she numbered it around 30, but who knows how much inking has transpired since then? Her first tat — which she got at 16 — was “a typical tramp stamp, with a rose and an architectural design around it,” she said, calling it “ridiculous.” The others run the gamut from boxing gloves — to honor her godfather, boxing legend, Lionel Rose — to a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle.

5. She’s a sucker for someone who can make her laugh

“My big thing with women is I love girls with a sense of humor,” Rose told After Ellen. “I just think that anyone with a sense of humor is by far more attractive than any other kind of person out there. I guess that’s kind of been my one common denominator with the girls that I’ve really liked — that kind of laid-back, self-deprecating sense of humor.”

6. She dabbles in the fashion world, too

In 2010, Rose took part in a high-profile collaboration with Australian fashion house, Milk and Honey. The clothes, all edgy styles she considers wardrobe staples — think distressed denim and graphic prints — were displayed using a tram as a catwalk. “I think of fashion as art, not clothing and it’s a way to express yourself without words,” she explained to Nylon magazine.

7. At Litchfield, she’s going to catch a few eyes

Specifically, both Piper’s and Alex’s! God, we can’t wait another second for this season to start. According to Netflix, Rose will play Stella Carlin, “an inmate at Litchfield Federal Correctional Institution whose sarcastic sense of humor and captivating looks quickly draw the attention of some of Litchfield’s inmates.” Could OITNB see its first ménage à trois this season? Um, we’ll certainly be staying tuned for that.

What are you looking forward to most about OITNB‘s new season?
