Criterion Group has just released the tape of McConaughey auditioning for Dazed and Confused. And it is glorious in all its grainy glory.

The story of how McConaughey got the audition is just as you would expect it to be. According to reports, the hunky actor met the director of the film at a Hyatt where McConaughey used to hang out because his buddy tended the bar and would give him free drinks. Seriously, that’s the story. The guy oozes cool.

It is clear from the tape that no one would be more perfect to play Wooderson than the tanned, toned and totally laid-back McConaughey.

We don’t get the ubiquitous and oft-quoted, “All right, all right, all right.” But we do get a few of the great lines from the cult classic.
