Michael Keaton’s next film could make you hate McDonald’s

The shiny golden arches of McDonald’s are about to get much darker.

A new film called The Founder will chronicle the chain’s rise from neighborhood hamburger joint to minimum-wage monolith, and Cinema Blend reports it wasn’t always a feel-good tale of American entrepreneurialism.

Michael Keaton has signed on to play one of the leading roles — that of key franchise builder, Ray Kroc — in the film that reportedly will resemble David Fincher’s The Social Network and Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood: a tale of a meteoric rise with a serious dark side.

According to Cinema Blend, the movie will stay pretty true to life. It’ll tell the tale of Kroc, an Illinois businessman who partners up with Mac and Dick McDonald, owners of a California burger shack that’s been using mass production techniques — inspired by the industrialization of the auto industry — to invent a new concept: fast food. Kroc’s business savvy mixed with the McDonald brothers’ innovative ideas would, within a few decades, become the largest food chain in the world — a billion-dollar industry leader with franchise locations in well over 100 countries.

The site reports that John Lee Hancock, of The Blind Side and Saving Mr. Banks, is directing, and the script is penned by Robert Siegel, who also wrote The Wrestler and Turbo. Few other details are known about the forthcoming flick, other than it’s not likely to paint a rosy picture of McDonald’s, already a favorite punching bag for those who oppose corporate America, and in light of steadily declining sales and decreasing popularity among millennials, McDonald’s probably isn’t too happy about that.
