By now we all know that Miley Cyrus likes to get her message across by way of shock value.
Be it drug use, nudity, freedom of expression or homeless youth, Cyrus is more than willing to constantly lay it all out on the line in any extreme way that will garner more attention for her cause. This week was no different, as Cyrus raised eyebrows on Thursday by posting a photo of a woman with her hand down the front of her shorts with the caption, “a masturbate a day keeps the haters away.”

Unfortunately for Cyrus, masturbation may keep the haters away, but the picture she posted does not. But should it? Yes, the former Hanna Montana star habitually posts pictures strictly for shock value and yes, it might be possible that people close to her should be concerned about her possible drug use. However, it’s totally wrong to condemn her for making a statement about masturbation.

It’s important for all females to feel comfortable with their own sexuality and Cyrus is empowering women, young and old, to explore themselves in a way that our society has caused most people to feel shame about. If more people were so open about it, the topic wouldn’t be as taboo and the unnecessary guilt often associated with the act wouldn’t be so prevalent. Honestly, wouldn’t the world be a better place if women, and men, were more at peace with themselves?
Now, the way that Cyrus has executed her message about self-love is a bit more provocative than most people would like, but that doesn’t mean that she doesn’t have the right to publicly voice her opinion about masturbation.
Perhaps we should be more disturbed by the hateful responses that turn up on Cyrus’ posts than the messages that the pop star is sending.

What’s worse: A young woman speaking her mind about her sexuality, or the constant spewing of hate and breaking down of others on social media that occurs every single second of every single day?
