In a heartbreaking interview with OWN, Amber Rose, who announced the end of her marriage to rapper, Wiz Khalifa, last summer, explains her family’s biases, which may have played a role in the split.

The interview was part of OWN’s Light Girls special, a counterpart to their previously aired Black Girls. In it, Rose, who is of Cape Verdean and Italian descent, explains that she has family members who disapproved of her union to Wiz — because of his race.

“With my family — they feel like they’re more superior, or better than an African-American, because ‘We’re Creole and we have culture,'” Rose, visibly emotional, explains. “And that’s something that I’ve battled with most of my life.”

She goes on to explain that some of the family even went so far as to skip the wedding because of their biases.

It’s more of the older people in my family. They didn’t come to my wedding because they didn’t feel…” Rose pauses and wipes tears from her eyes. “This is so difficult. Sorry. It’s such a sensitive subject that it’s hard to explain yourself without sounding mean or bitter or angry.”

But Rose, who is clearly herself still trying to understand the backward views of some of her family members, seems to realize on camera that she has every right to be mad.

“But I am. I’m angry that my family is like that,” she says. “And they want to pass so bad that they raise my mom and my uncles and my aunts to not fully know their culture. Our younger generation, we’ve embraced it so much.”

Rose and Wiz have one child together, a son named Sebastian. Both seem to have been recovering well since their surprising split, but this video reveals that, behind the scenes, it must be much tougher than it appears. We wish all the best for Amber Rose, Wiz Khalifa and both of their families.
