We’re so excited to see a network finally bring a female superhero to life. Not that we don’t love The Flash, Arrow and all of the Superman shows that have graced the small screen, but it’s about darn time we got a woman in a title role fighting crime and protecting the innocent. “It’s a female empowerment story,” said CBS entertainment chairman, Nina Tassler, of the show at a press tour earlier this month. “We’re big feminists. It’s her intellect, it’s her skill, it’s her smarts. It’s all of those elements.”

Get to know Benoist a little better and find out why she will kick butt as Supergirl.
1. She’s already worked with greats like Al Pacino
Glee fans know her as Marley Rose, but Supergirl isn’t the only big project Benoist has brewing. According to IMDb, the actress stars in Danny Collins, which should hit theaters this year and features heavyweights like Al Pacino, Annette Bening, Jennifer Garner and Christopher Plummer. She also worked alongside J.K. Simmons in 2014’s Whiplash, which just won Simmons a Golden Globe.
2. She’s no stranger to crime
Crime shows, that is. Benoist has appeared on crime-fighting shows, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Law & Order: Criminal Intent and Blue Bloods. She also guest-starred on an episode of The Good Wife and two episodes of Homeland.
3. She’s got a picture-perfect relationship
Benoist is engaged to Glee costar, Blake Jenner, and she told E!’s Marc Malkin last year that they are planning a “small and intimate” wedding. Benoist is not shy about sharing candids with her fiancé on social media and we still can’t believe how perfect the two are as Sandy and Danny of Grease fame.
4. She’s outdoorsy
Like costar, Lea Michele, Benoist’s Instagram is rife with photos that showcase her love of nature.
5. She prefers working on indie films over big productions
Though she has respect for mainstream, big-budget jobs, her true love is working on small films. “I honestly prefer working on indie films. I prefer the people, I prefer a more intimate setting,” she told MovieMaker magazine in October.
6. She has her eyes on Broadway
“That’s been a dream of mine since I was a little girl. I’d love to be in a Broadway play, I’d love to do Shakespeare on stage,” she told MovieMaker. “I look at careers like Cate Blanchett’s and I admire them so much. I want that variety, I want to travel the world.”
7. She uses acting as a form of therapy
Like most artists, Benoist sees her craft as therapeutic. “I’m a really emotional person, like, scarily so,” she said. “Acting’s always been a way for me to channel the things that I don’t necessarily know how to cope with, things I have trouble finding a place for in my day-to-day life while still functioning as a human being.”
8. She’s enamored with her two dogs
Benoist’s Twitter and Instagram accounts are full of pictures of her two adorable canines and it’s easy to see why she’s so obsessed: The pooches are seriously adorable.
