Sister Wives‘ Kody Brown divorces wife No. 1 to marry wife No. 4

Sister Wives‘ Kody Brown has divorced one wife so he can marry another. But it’s not for the reasons you think.

The polygamist dynamic is pretty confusing, but here goes. Apparently, as reported by TMZ, Kody’s wife No. 1, Meri, made the decision with her entire family (the other three wives included) to divorce Kody so the youngest wife, Robyn, could marry him and get the legal benefits of being a wife. Namely, Robyn’s three kids from a previous marriage will now be afforded insurance since Robyn and Kody are officially wed.

While the sister wives all recognize they are married to Kody, legally he can only have one official wife under United States law. (And only one wife can get the perks, though his children are all afforded benefits.) Since the start, that main wife has always been Meri, whom he married first in 1990.

According to a statement the Browns gave to Entertainment Tonight, the family unit still remains united.

“We have chosen to legally restructure our family. We made the decision together as a family. We are grateful to our family, friends and fans for all their love and support,” the statement said in part.

And though the family is touting that they are all in this together, their social media pages seem to suggest that the divorce hasn’t been entirely smooth sailing.

I guess we’ll have to tune in to the show to find out what this means for the family unit. Will Meri still be the same part of the group? Or will the divorce mean something for the family’s dynamic despite their best intentions?

Do you think Kody Brown’s divorce is justifiable? Would you be offended if you were Meri?
