Joanna Lumley causes a stir with her comments on eating

by

Joanna Lumley may be joining Jennifer Saunders, Lulu and Dame Edna Everage in this week’s edition of The Great Comic Relief Bake Off but the actress says she “hates cake” — and it doesn’t sound like she eats much of anything else.

We’re wondering how the 68-year-old actress’s dislike of the sweet stuff will affect her ability to impress Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood in the Bake Off kitchen.

Lumley’s comments to the Mail on Sunday about her eating habits in general have caused a bit of a stir this week. She said: “I don’t eat any meals. I eat a bit throughout the day if I’m hungry, but not a big meal. I’ll have some nuts or maybe some crisps and that’s enough.”

“I’m full of energy and never ill, and I haven’t eaten meat for 40 years. It’s no coincidence,” the Absolutely Fabulous star added.

Is Lumley’s diet one that nutritionists are likely to recommend?

It can certainly be wise to “graze” on smaller portions throughout the day instead of stuffing yourself with three huge meals but what those snacks consist of is crucial. For example, crisps don’t contain any of the essential nutrients provided by fruit and vegetables and even nuts, for all their health benefits, don’t contain the antioxidants the body needs to ward off disease.

Perhaps not the best diet to follow, then. At least not without doing your research and getting some professional advice. And eating loads of vegetables.
