We love cupcakes. We love puppies. So when an event marries the deliciousness of fresh-baked cupcakes with the ability to raise vital funds for a good cause, our participation is a no-brainer, right?!
Well, that’s what Cupcake Day for the RSPCA is all about – and on Aug. 20, the animal charity is counting on you (and your tastebuds) for your support.
In 2011, happy campers across Australia congregated to snack on cupcakes to the tune of $1.1 million in donations raised for the RSPCA. This year, the charity is hoping to crash through that figure to set a new fundraising record.
“We’d love to beat lasts year’s total funds raised of $1.1 million,” a charity spokesperson said, “so we can truly say that Cupcake Day for the RSPCA is the sweetest day of the year!”
According to the respected animal charity, your much-appreciated donations will be put to good use throughout the nation in a range of ways, such as:
- $10 – Provides an enrichment toy for an abused, mistreated or abandoned cat, which assists in their behavioural development.
- $30 – Allows the RSPCA to purchase bales of hay to feed the farm animals in their care.
- $40 – Can microchip a cat or dog to ensure that they always find their way home.
- $60 – Provides warm bedding, heat pads and lamps to keep a puppy warm.
- $100 – Subsidises medical treatment for an injured dog or cat.
- $200 – Keeps an RSPCA inspector on the road fighting cruelty.
Keen to get involved? Here are a few suggestions for events you can hold to celebrate Cupcake Day and help out a good cause:
High tea with friends
High tea is becoming more and more popular, as it’s a simple event to host and appeals to all ages. Preparation is as stress-free as you want it to be: Cut a few sandwiches into triangles and serve alongside fresh pots of tea (and cupcakes, of course!), and ask all of your guests for a small donation. If you register your Cupcake Day page, your friends and family can donate online, otherwise a receipt book is included in your host kit.
Morning tea at work
What better way to celebrate RSPCA’s Cupcake Day than by breaking up the boredom of a regular workday? Schedule a morning tea and ask a few people you work with to bake a few goodies to donate to the cause. Co-workers can donate a $2 coin for each mid-morning snack they reach for.
Gather with your mother’s group
No one needs a sugary treat more than a sleep-deprived new mum – and if you’re meeting with your mother’s group every week anyway, then it makes sense to jazz up you next gathering with some cupcakes!
At a sporting event
Do you attend a weekly tennis match? Play netball each Tuesday with a group after work? Or how about a kid’s sports game? If you (or a family member) attend a regular sporting event, you could piggy back off the weekly appointment to host a mini-gathering before or after the game. Alternatively, you could bake a dozen cupcakes and bring them along, asking for a $3 to $5 donation for each baked treat. Remember, a receipt book is included in your host kit if you register, so everyone’s donation becomes tax deductible.
