She’s a successful actress, especially known for her roles in American Horror Story. But she’s also a model and she’s about to make history at New York Fashion Week when she becomes the first model with Down syndrome to hit the runway.
“Young girls and even young women… [see me] and say, ‘Hey, if she can do it so can I,'” Brewer, who will be rocking an original design by Carrie Hammer when Fashion Week kicks off on Friday, told the Today show. “It’s a true inspiration being a role model for any young women to [encourage them] in being who they are and showing who they are.”
Brewer is an outspoken advocate for people with intellectual disabilities. She’s taking part in Fashion Week as part of Hammer’s “Role Models Not Runway Models” campaign, according to E! News.

Hammer explained to Today that the campaign started by accident a year ago, the first time she was asked to show her collection at Fashion Week.
“I called up my existing clients who were all incredible women and one of them happened to be a doctor and a sex therapist who happened to be in wheelchair,” she said. “It was never intended to be this incredible statement.”
It was at a fan’s suggestion that Hammer started working with Brewer.
“I explained to her how important it is for my daughter to have role models like [Brewer] to see that [anything] is possible,” Katie Driscoll, who has a daughter with Down syndrome, said about why she suggested the actress be one of Hammer’s models.
As for the dress Brewer will be rocking when she makes runway history? Hammer said it’ll be inspired by the actress’ American Horror Story characters.

“It’s amazing,” Brewer said. “It’s really neat. Many women have many sides to their personality, this dress fits… mine. I am honored to be in it.”
