Lorena Rojas dies at 44: 5 Things to know about the Mexican actress

Lorena Rojas has lost her battle with cancer.

The beloved Mexican actress and singer died in Miami, Florida, on Feb 16. Rojas has very publicly battled various stages of cancer and was surrounded by her friends, family and boyfriend, according to sources.

You might not know a lot about the famed telenovela star.

Here are five interesting — and sometimes tragic — things about the actress.

1. She has been on television since she was 19 years old

She began her artistic career in 1990 when she appeared in the telenovela Alcanzar una estrella. This drama was so successful that she went on to record a sequel, Alcanzar una estrella II, the following year, and has been appearing on hit telenovela shows ever since.

2. She currently has two albums and one single on iTunes

She released an album in 2006, “Deseo.” And most recently, she released a children’s album inspired by her daughter, “Hijos del sol,” in December of 2014.

3. She leaves behind an adopted daughter

Rojas adopted a daughter in 2013 while she was in remission from her cancer. Luciana was born on Oct. 6, 2013 in Miami. According to sources, Rojas had been trying to get pregnant unsuccessfully when she was diagnosed in 2008. Her daughter will now live with and be raised by her aunt, actress Mayra Rojas, and her adoptive father.

4. She had beaten two types of cancer before it spread to her liver

Rojas was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008. She had a mastectomy in 2012 but was only cancer-free until 2012 when she was diagnosed with bone cancer. It was just last November when the actress received the tragic news that she now had tumors in her liver and there was going to be no recovery.

5. One of her most notable roles was playing a mother who died of cancer

In a prophetic and highly coincidental incident of life imitating art, she is widely remembered for her role in a telenovela called Canción de amor, back in the late ’90s. Her character, Ana, suffered from cancer and died at the end of the show, leaving behind a daughter.

Rojas just celebrated her birthday last week, and her last tweet was a thank-you to her fans and family for the birthday wishes.

It says, “Thank you all for celebrating my birthday with me. Beautiful day.”
