Billboard reports that Afroman, the rapper famous for his 2001 hit, “Because I Got High,” was arrested Tuesday in Biloxi, Mississippi, allegedly because he punched a female fan in the face during one of his shows.
The site says Afroman, whose real name is Joseph Edgar Foreman, was performing when the woman got on the stage and came towards him. A video of the incident posted to TMZ shows Afroman playing his guitar and then turning to his left and swinging hard at the woman, knocking her completely down to the ground. The punch appears from the video to have been unprovoked and completely unexpected.

TMZ says Afroman continued to play, even as the woman was on the ground bleeding and crying, and it wasn’t until the house lights came on and the music stopped that the rapper stopped playing. Security came onto the stage and helped the woman off, the site says, and police escorted Afroman outside of the venue and handcuffed him.
Afroman’s rep told Billboard the reaction was instinctual — that Afroman was surprised by the woman sneaking up on him while he was on stage and that his back was turned so he couldn’t see her before he reacted to the surprise by swinging hard.
“This was a completely involuntary reflex reaction to people infringing on his stage space,” the rep wrote in a statement Tuesday. “It was uncharacteristic behavior that was initiated by outside uncontrolled forces.”
Billboard says the rep also blamed lackluster security at the venue — something Afroman specifically requests for all his performances — and said the rapper often struggles with fans joining him on the stage during shows.
As for what Afroman has to say for himself? His post to Facebook the night of the incident says it all — and he doesn’t seem the least bit sorry.
