19 Kids and Counting review: Jill and Derick practice parenting

With all the news that has been coming up about the Duggars, there weren’t a lot of surprising moments in the season premiere, but there was a whole lot of cuteness to make up for it.

Here comes another bride

If you’re anything like me, you already know pretty much everything there is to know about the Duggars right now. At least, you know every bit of information that they’ve released publicly. So it wasn’t really all that exciting to watch Jessa pick out her bridesmaids’ dresses. Heck, I saw those pictures months ago.

What was fun was seeing Jessa and Ben heading over to their soon-to-be home. I don’t know if it was already known, but I didn’t realize they would be moving into Josh and Anna’s old house. I have to say that some of my favorite moments took place in that house. I still remember crying when Mackynzie was born and then doing it all over again during Michael’s birth. It wasn’t his arrival in the bathroom that got to me, but rather a moment early on in Anna’s labor when she was cuddling Mackynzie and crying at the joy of welcoming a new baby.

The old house seems to be holding up great, despite a pesky mold issue I’m sure they got cleared up in no time. I can’t wait to see Jessa and Ben’s babies running around the place.

Practice makes progress

It was sweet to see Jill and Derick settling into life as a married couple in their new home together. The episode started out counting each of their kisses and I was disappointed they didn’t keep up with that. Within the first few minutes alone, we got up to nearly 10, so I’m sure the total by the end of the episode had to be over 20.

The couple decided to have Jill’s four youngest sisters over for a sleepover, which offered up quite the cuteness factor. First, Jill had to go shopping for dress-up clothes (come on, who wouldn’t want to go and do that?) and then the newlyweds showed just how brave they were when they offered Johannah, Jennifer, Jordyn and Josie chocolate fondue for dessert.

The sleepover was like a practice parenting course for the couple and I got a real kick out of seeing Derick playing with the little girls. While Derick did opt for the more masculine dress-up option of a hat and a beard, he didn’t hesitate to get right in there and paint the little girls’ fingernails. When it was over, the couple continued the tradition from the Duggar household of having Bible time before bed.

The big secret

Though I already knew what Jill and Derick had to say to the family, I did enjoy getting to see the reactions of her parents and siblings when the Dillards announced their news. Setting it up as a confession, Jill admitted to “stealing” something from her mother, which caused a couple of shocked looks to go around the family. But as soon as Jill and Derick mentioned a pregnancy test, the jig was up and the family looked torn between surprise and joy.

As Jim Bob pointed out, Jill and Derick are getting a much earlier start on their family than Jim Bob and Michelle did. If Jill turns out to be as fertile as her mother, it’s quite possible that the couple could end up with more than 19 children in their brood.

Jill summed it up perfectly: “The tribe of Dillard has started.”

What did you think of the premiere of 19 Kids and Counting? Can you see Jill having more babies than her mother?
