While we’re looking forward to the Brits next week we can’t help but reminisce about past years. Didn’t it use to be much more fun?
Remember when one of Chumbawamba chucked water over John Prescott? When Liam Gallagher dropped the f-bomb (a lot), lobbed his microphone into the crowd and was then deemed a “kn*bhead” by host Peter Kay? The Spice Girls giggling when Geri Halliwell flashed a boob on stage? During the ’90s and early noughties everyone at the Brits seemed to be drunk, carefree or naughty — or possibly all three.
What’s happened to the Brits? Are stars simply more concerned about their public image these days? Apparently event organisers clamped down on bad behaviour a few years ago, insisting that attendees display “world-class professionalism.” Which is all very admirable but it doesn’t make for the most exciting TV.
So in the spirit of Brits past, here are a few of the most memorable moments from previous years.
Jarvis vs. Jacko
One of the most shocking Brits moments of all time was courtesy of Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker, who ambushed Michael Jackson‘s performance of “Earth Song” in 1996. Cocker stormed the stage, bent over and wiggled his bottom at the newly crowned Artist of a Generation. There was such an uproar about this booty-shaking Cocker even attended a press conference about it.

Robbie Williams tries to fight Liam Gallagher
In 2000 the feud between Oasis and Take That’s loudmouths was at an all-time high. Robbie Williams took the chance to challenge Liam Gallagher to a televised fight during his acceptance speech for Best British Single. Alas Gallagher was out of the country at the time.

Kylie gets the JT love
Justin Timberlake‘s performance with Kylie Minogue at the 2003 Brits has to be one of the steamiest the ceremony has ever seen. Basically he groped her bum.

Adele gets cross
Perhaps there’s still hope for some excitement at this year’s ceremony. After all it was only a few years ago that Adele flipped the bird after host James Corden cut her off mid-way through her acceptance speech for Best Album. She was getting into the flow of her heartfelt words when Corden intervened to introduce closing act Blur and she was none too happy.

If the 2015 Brits aren’t as controversial as previous years at least they’ll be funny. This year’s ceremony at London’s O2 Arena is hosted by Ant and Dec who last fronted the show in 2001. And they always give good TV.
Watch the Brit Awards 2015 on ITV from 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25.
