The Twilight star has done something no American actress has ever done before: She took home a César Award, the most prestigious award available in French film.

Comparable to the American Academy Awards, the ceremony for the César Awards was held Friday. K-Stew won the honor for her supporting role in Clouds of Sils Maria, a French film directed by Olivier Assayas. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year.

According to People, 24-year-old Stewart appeared surprised when her name was called for the award. The magazine described her acceptance speech as “emotional” as she attempted to accept the award in French.

Juliette Binoche and Chloe Grace Moretz also starred in the critically acclaimed drama. In it, Binoche plays an actress who appears in a revival of the play that launched her acting career 20 years earlier.

Backstage at the show, People says Stewart explained to reporters why she’d rather act in France than in Hollywood.

“The reasons why people make films here in France are very different from the reasons why people make movies in Hollywood and I prefer it here a little bit,” she said.

Clouds of Sils Maria was nominated for six César Awards, including Best Actress for Binoche, Best Director for Assayas and Best Film.

Sean Penn was also in attendance at Friday’s ceremony and was given an honorary César. Male American actors have won the award in the past, but Stewart is the first American woman to nab one of the prestigious awards.
