The Vampire Diaries: 6 Things are going to change now that Sheriff Forbes is dead

The Vampire Diaries is mixing things up now that Sheriff Forbes is dead.

Executive producer Julie Plec gave us the inside scoop at the show’s scope for the remainder of the season, assuring us that quite a few characters will be heading in new directions for the final half of the season.

WARNING: Spoilers below. Do not continue reading unless you want to know all the vampirelicious dirt on Season 6.

1. We’re switching focus

Now that Sheriff Forbes is dead, we’re going to get back to the supernatural heart of the show. Caroline (Candice Accola) losing her mom was a very human story line for the show. I’m really hoping that the next half will be all about the bloodsucking bad guys we know and love. They’ve been kind of absent from this season of the show thus far, but if Enzo has any say about it, they’re sure to make a comeback.

2. Enzo’s big purpose

Though we’ve only gotten teases of his big motive so far this season, Plec assured us that we are going to get to the heart of Enzo’s goals once the show returns. “It’s not going well for him at the moment,” Plec said of Enzo’s master plan. “Ultimately, Enzo’s a guy who’s deeply rooted in loyalty. And we still haven’t scratched the surface of learning why: What makes him tick, why does he feel that way, why was Stefan’s betrayal of Damon (Ian Somerhalder) in Enzo’s mind so profound that it makes Enzo want to just go out of his way for sport to do things that will mess up Stefan’s life?”

3. Enzo’s backstory

“One of the things that we do in the final chapter of the season, once we get through what we call ‘the Sheriff Forbes chapter,’ is start exploring the backstory of Enzo and understanding what makes him tick and why he is the way he is,” Plec promised.

4. Matt has a new direction

Matt is about to “embark on a new path for himself,” Plec shared. We saw that he’ll be joining the police academy, and we would be surprised if he’ll eventually take over for Sheriff Forbes, though Plec was sure to say that her seat would remain vacant until Season 7.

5. Alaric and Jo

While Plec said producers initially had no idea who would win the merge, they were always “rooting for Jo because we have a plan for Jo.”

Thanks to last week’s episode, we know that plan is a little bundle of joy and a wedding for the new lovebirds. And while that romance definitely happened quickly, we have a feeling these two have what it takes to make it work. We just hope to see more of Jo in the future. She seems like she could be the perfect mentor for Elena (Nina Dobrev), who is embarking on a medical career (if she ever goes back to school).

6. Caroline’s emotions

The big drama of the last episode was Caroline, who decided to switch off her emotions just as Stefan decided he really did want to pursue a long-term relationship with her. (Why are they always just a little too late?)

Although we didn’t actually see Caroline flip the switch, we did see her snap Elena’s neck and make a run for it. And, thanks to the preview for the next episode, we know she’s definitely going off the deep end.

The Vampire Diaries returns March 12 on The CW.
