Fifty Shades of Grey: Despite success, there may not be a sequel

Will Fifty Shades of Grey‘s box office success be replicated when the film adaptations of the other two books, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed hit the big screen?

Maybe not, because multiple sites are reporting that the franchise is in danger after Jamie Dornan, the Irish actor who stars as enigmatic billionaire, Christian Grey, walked away from the role.

But before you take to social media to express your dismay like so many people did today, hold on just a minute. The studio that produced the film, which had the largest February opening in U.S. history, making more than $93 million in its first weekend, hadn’t yet given the green light to films based on the other two books.

According to the Daily Mail, a couple of factors are jeopardizing the sequel. Dornan has reportedly backed out because his wife of two years, Amelia Warner, is uncomfortable with the raunchy role.

“[Amelia] hasn’t seen the film and I don’t think she will,” Dornan told the Evening Standard. “To be honest, I’d understand if she didn’t want to.”

And the film’s director, Sam Taylor-Johnson, has reportedly quit the franchise due to disagreements with the books’ author, E. L. James.

“Sam won’t be back for the Fifty Shades sequels,” an insider said. “She wants out and Universal knows that’s the right decision. Her relationship with [E. L. James] has become absolutely toxic. They despise each other and blame each other for the problems with the film.”

Taylor-Johnson had previously said she hadn’t yet heard whether there would be a sequel.

“I have a feeling discussions are going on behind closed doors, but I’ve heard nothing so I’m as in the dark as everybody else on this,” she said.
