We’re loving this new girl power ad featuring Mindy Kaling.
More:Mindy Kaling is actually invisible, just like all minority women
The super-successful, self-identifying feminist actress has partnered up with American Express to create this awesome spot that celebrates the strength and perseverance of successful women — especially the ones who have to work harder for it.
“When I got to Hollywood, they said, ‘Hmm, maybe you should play the best friend or sidekick,'” Mindy says over shots of her waking up at 4 a.m. to work out while it’s still dark, like a real boss.
“It was very difficult,” she continues. “I was told that they don’t put girls who look like me on TV.”

She’s saying all of this as she continues her morning routine, which includes eating jelly beans for breakfast, because why not? And by the end of the ad, Mindy is just settling into her director’s chair like it’s no big deal.
“I guess they can’t say that anymore,” she says, and we all fall a little more in love with her.
Mindy is one of the most successful women in television. She came into prominence by playing Kelly Kapoor on NBC’s The Office, a show for which she was also a writer, director and coexecutive producer. Now she acts, writes, directs and produces her own show on Fox, The Mindy Project. She’s been nominated for countless awards and won a handful, including three Screen Actors Guild Awards. She’s easily as recognizable as TV’s other big leading ladies in comedy, like Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. And she’s not white.
According to her new ad, being a minority actress was an extra challenge for Kaling. We’re glad she was able to overcome and be not only a leading lady, but an inspiration to the next generation of women who will overcome hardship and prejudice to kick ass and take names, just like Kaling has done.
As the ad puts it, this one is dedicated “to the next generation of unlikely leading ladies.”
