Don’t typecast Dakota Johnson just because of her Fifty Shades of Grey role. There is a lot more to this actress than lip-biting sexy time.
1. Critics love her
Johnson sold it with her performance in Fifty Shades of Grey. The Wrap described her as “vivacious,” Newsday called her “fetching” and the New York Daily News said her performance “smart” and “convincing.” In other words, whether you liked the movie or not, Johnson kind of nailed it.

2. She was Miss Golden Globe 2006
Johnson has a long history with the Globes. Her mother Melanie Griffith was Miss Golden Globe in 1975, which made Johnson the first second-generation Miss Golden Globe. She’s also the third generation involved with the Globes in her family. Her grandmother Tippi Hedren won the award for Most Promising Newcomer in 1964.
3. She isn’t just an actress
Aside from acting, Johnson was a dancer growing up, and she models. Most recently, she was the face of Mango Jeans in 2009.
4. She doesn’t have social media
She may have appeared in a little movie called The Social Network (as Justin Timberlake‘s bed buddy), but that doesn’t mean she’s into the online fame. Johnson doesn’t have Twitter, Facebook or Instagram.
5. She successfully completed rehab in 2007
Johnson’s path to success hasn’t come without some bumps in the road. In 2007 she was admitted and completed a 30-day program for drug and alcohol addiction at Visions Adolescent Treatment Center in Malibu.

6. She landed Fifty Shades with a sexy monologue
According to Elite Daily, Johnson read a monologue from the Ingmar Bergman film Persona, which is super-sexually explicit and, apparently, just what Fifty Shades producers were looking for.
7. She has no shame
Johnson told Elle she was up for the racy role of Anastasia Steele because “I don’t have any problem doing anything. The secret is I have no shame.”
Secret is out!
8. Her film debut was a family affair
Johnson made her first appearance on-screen in 1999 in the film Crazy in Alabama. She and her half-sister Stella Banderas played daughters to their real-life mother Griffith. As if that isn’t true enough to life, Antonio Banderas, Johnson’s stepfather, also directed the film.
9. She doesn’t want to talk about her dad, OK?
“It’s not necessarily annoying. I’ve come to understand the allure of that to other people, how it seems so interesting and different,” Johnson told Interview magazine of her Miami Vice star dad Don Johnson and her actress mom Griffith. “But for me it’s just my family, it’s the way I grew up and it’s my mom and my dad. It doesn’t really bother me because I get it, but sometimes it’s kind of a drag to talk about.”

10. She’s all about some juice
Forget cleansing, Johnson just wants to sip on some fresh-squeezed goodness throughout the day. According to Popsugar, during Fifty Shades filming, she and director Sam Taylor-Johnson were hooked.
11. She’s not really a gym rat but is serious about staying healthy
Johnson admitted that in the past she didn’t have a regular gym regimen, but it was important for her to be in shape for Fifty Shades, given all the nakedness. According to the same article by Popsugar, the scantily clad scenes were enough to get her in the gym, as was her boyfriend at the time, Jordan Masterson.
12. She’s hilarious
Aside from appearing in The Office and starring in Ben and Kate, her funny bone is making its way to SNL next for a hosting gig that’s sure to deliver. Just check out these promos in case you need more convincing.
