Glee is set to wrap up its six-season run on March 20, and while we’re sure it will be a massive tear-fest watching all the various New Directions members go off in, well, new directions, we have no doubt the finale’s most poignant moments will involve paying tribute to Finn Hudson and the man who played him, Cory Monteith.

So, what do we know so far about a possible Finn/Cory tribute? Well, for starters, we know that it’s been forefront in creator Ryan Murphy‘s mind for quite some time. Back in 2013, not long after Monteith died, Murphy revealed at a Paley Center event that he had an idea in mind about how to rework his original finale plan, which heavily involved Finn.
“The final year of the show… was designed around Rachel and Cory/Finn’s story. I always knew that, I always knew how it would end. I knew what the last shot was — [Finn] was in it. I knew what the last line was — [Rachel] said it to him. So when a tragedy like that happens, you sort of have to pause and figure out what you want to do, so we’re figuring that out now,” Murphy said at the time.
“I have a good idea,” Murphy continued, referring to how he wanted to end the show. “I’m going to tell the studio and the network how after Cory’s unfortunate passing we can end the show [in a way] that I think is very satisfactory. And kind of in his honor, which I love.”

And while we don’t know a great deal of specifics about how Finn/Cory will be remembered, Kevin McHale, who plays Artie on the show, revealed to Access Hollywood a few weeks ago, before filming the series’ final episode, that a tribute was definitely happening.
“I think [Finn] is always remembered and especially at a time like this at the very end, there will definitely be some sort of mention of him. He’ll be involved in some way,” McHale said, noting he was satisfied with the finale and that he thought viewers would also be happy with how it ends.
Just last week, Jane Lynch, who plays Sue Sylvester on the show, revealed to Big Morning Buzz Live host, Nick Lachey, that one of the final episodes will flash back to 2009, when the pilot was filmed. Given that Finn Hudson was a central and critical figure in the show’s pilot episode, it seems a fair assumption to make that this flashback will involve him somehow.
Lynch also revealed the entire cast reunited to sing one final song in the finale, One Republic’s “I Lived.” Given the sentiment of the song — hopes, dreams, making each moment count and inevitable endings — it would seem a really fitting way to incorporate one final tribute to the character and the man who were such a pivotal part of the show’s success.

One thing we do know for sure? However Glee chooses to remember its quarterback, based on how it paid tribute to Finn with the first episode following Monteith’s death and has made mention of his character in subsequent episodes, the finale’s tribute will be done beautifully and with a whole lot of heart.
