Gina Rodriguez recently won a Golden Globe in the Best Actress in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy category for her role in Jane the Virgin, making her only the second Latina in history to take home the award — something America Ferrera is very disappointed by.

Although she has only praise for Rodriguez, the Ugly Betty actress is disheartened by the fact that she and Rodriguez are the only Latina winners.
Speaking during an interview with the Huffington Post, she said, “I’ve known Gina for years now, and she is an incredibly warm, genuine and gifted person. I’m very, very happy for her… [But] it’s a little disheartening to know that there are only two of us.”
You’d be wrong if you thought that the reason Ferrera was upset was based purely on award shows, though; it’s something much more serious that she takes issue with: She believes Hollywood still fails to see the diversity that exists in the world we live in.

“The problem isn’t in the awards. It’s not a Golden Globes problem, it’s not an award ceremony problem,” Ferrera explained. “It’s a creation of content issue. We need more in art and entertainment that is reflective of the world that we live in. And there’s just not enough reflection in it for women, for people of color. There’s still a huge amount of stories that have yet to be told, and we need those voices to find those platforms so that they can share those experiences.”
Ferrera went on to explain that as someone who watches entertainment shows, she takes the lack of diversity very personally.
“As an audience member, I take it very personally. I take it extremely personally when I watch,” she said “I’m a huge lover of television and of film — I have been my whole life — and when there’s too much of the same thing and not enough to reflect the world that I live in, I take it personally.”
Ferrera makes some very thought-provoking points, which were similar to Michelle Rodriguez’s comments last week about Hollywood being lazy.
