This is one “Weird Al” Yankovic performance you are not going to roll your eyes at.
The Night of Too Many Stars was held on Saturday and featured all the heavy hitters from Comedy Central. As Jon Stewart described it, “This is the Oscars, with less of the Travolta face-touching.”
The Night of Too Many Stars is a telethon to raise funds and awareness to help children with autism. It featured Maya Rudolph, Paul Rudd, Will Forte and even Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. But it was “Weird Al” Yankovic’s performance that didn’t make us laugh but stole our hearts instead.
The last time Comedy Central hosted one of these events was back in 2012, and the show featured the then-11-year-old Jodi DiPiazza, who has autism, as it did this time, too. During that show, she performed “Firework” with Katy Perry.
This time the super impressive and accomplished DiPiazza took the stage, cool as a cucumber, with one of her favorite performers, “Weird Al.”
DiPiazza, who was diagnosed with autism at age 2, is a student at Mannes College of Music Preparatory Division and is studying piano, voice, music theory, jazz pain, guitar and songwriting.
Her performance was a parody of The Kinks’ “Lola,” a song called “Yoda,” and it is simply fantastic. The pair were joined at the end of the duet with a choir of children, all of whom also have autism.
