How The Bachelorette plans to pull off having two women, instead of one

Bachelorette fans, get ready for twice the drama.

The upcoming Season 11 of the ABC reality competition will #bless us with not just one, but two eligible ladies: The Bachelor‘s Britt Nilsson, who was axed during Week 7, and Kaitlyn Bristowe, who made it all the way to third place during Chris Soules’ season.

So how is that going to work? It turns out, having two bachelorettes isn’t totally unprecedented.

According to Us Weekly, the 2004 sixth season of The Bachelor featured two hunks who both met the ladies on the first night, and then, in a tables-have-turned moment, the contestants got to vote on who would be the final Bachelor. According to the site, the next Bachelorette season will be set up pretty much the same way: The men looking for love will vote for either Britt or Kaitlyn to continue on the show.

The twist was revealed by host, Chris Harrison, during Monday’s After the Final Rose special that followed the two-hour Season 19 finale.

Both Britt and Kaitlyn had expressed that they were open to being the next Bachelorette.

“I think the process works,” Britt said at the Women Tell All special. “It worked for me up until a certain point, and I think it works for him and I’ve seen it work for a lot of couples,” she said. “And yeah, I think that would be an amazing experience and if they asked me I would say yes.”

Kaitlyn added, “It’s a unique opportunity that I think opens a lot of doors for real love to happen. I always talk about the definition [of] insanity — you do something over and over again and you expect a different result, and I’m like, ‘I keep doing that, I keep falling in love with people and you expect a different result,’ but I’m super willing, excited to do that again.”

An insider close to the show told Us that Britt and Kaitlyn were both so well liked by fans, producers of the show didn’t want to pick just one of them.

“They’re not necessarily thrilled about this, but they’re also not horrified or upset,” the source said. “Clearly they both wanted to be the next Bachelorette, so they’re happy with sharing the role rather than not having it at all.”
