Raven-Symoné’s comments on the Michelle Obama ape comparison are inappropriate (VIDEO)

Raven-Symoné not only thinks racist comments about the first lady are OK, she even defended them.

The former Disney star was a guest host on ABC’s talk show, The View, Monday, where she gave us her take on some controversial comments made about Michelle Obama: Univision’s Rodner Figueroa suggested Obama could have been cast in Planet of the Apes. Many thought comparing the first lady to an ape had some serious racist undertones, and Figueroa was fired last week for making the comparison.

But on The View, Symoné not only seemed to agree, but weirdly defended Figueroa, despite insistence from Rosie Perez, who is a regular host on the show, that the comment was undoubtedly racist.

“He did say Michelle Obama looks like a cast member of the Planet of the Apes,” Perez said.

Symoné interrupted, “But was he saying it racist-like? Because [Figueroa] did say he voted for [Michelle] later and I don’t think he was saying it racist.”

“Oh, please!” Perez replied. “That’s like saying, ‘I’m not a racist, but I have black friends.”

Comedian Michelle Collins was a guest on the show at the same time as Symoné. She made the argument that Figueroa’s remarks weren’t really racist, but were just “stupid.”

“I am the Latin person here on this table,” Perez said in response. “And I would like to tell you that it was racist.”

This is where the whole segment takes a weird turn, because Symoné’s attempt at defending Figueroa is almost as inappropriate as the comments he made in the first place.

“Michelle, don’t fire me for this,” she said. “But some people look like animals. Is that rude? I look like a bird… so can I be mad at somebody that calls me ‘Toucan Sam’?”

Symoné’s comments have plenty of people upset, including many who headed to Twitter to vent their frustrations.
