Gina Rodriguez gives Deadline‘s racist comments the benefit of the doubt

Earlier this week, Deadline came under fire for their piece titled “Pilots 2015: The Year of Ethnic Castings — About Time or Too Much of a Good Thing?” Shonda Rhimes took to Twitter to blast the article as “ignorant,” and now Gina Rodriguez is weighing in on the topic, too.

On Wednesday night, the Jane the Virgin actress attended the Procter & Gamble Orgullosa night of Nuevas Latinas Living Fabulosa — an event celebrating Latina women and the success of the modern Latina — when she caught up with Refinery 29, who was curious to get her thoughts on Rhimes’ reaction.

“I’d love to believe that we’re misreading the tone of that article. I don’t think there’s anybody that reads that and agrees that anything’s being taken away from anyone,” she said, speaking to the writer’s claims that there’s been a noticeable shift toward minority castings, making many roles off-limits for Caucasian actors.

“Let’s just hope the writer has the opportunity to clear up anything we’ve maybe misread as negative,” she added.

The star then went on to explain that although many tend to agree with Rhimes’ comments on the piece, she’s eager not to blame anyone because she’s tired of all the negativity in the world.

I love to give people the benefit of the doubt. Nobody wants negative in their life,” she said.

It’s nice to know that Rodriguez looks for the positive in everything, don’t you think?
