Lavigne was diagnosed with a severe case of Lyme disease (the same disease that Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Yolanda Foster is suffering from), and it left her bedridden. Now, the singer is opening up about her battle with her health and her fight for recovery, in an interview with People magazine.

“I could barely eat, and when we went to the pool, I had to leave and go lie in bed,” the singer told the mag. “My friends asked, ‘What’s wrong?’ I didn’t know.”

Upon learning that the cause of her failing health was due to Lyme disease, Lavigne admits she was shocked.

“I had no idea a bug bite could do this,” she said, explaining that she thinks she could have been bitten by a tick last spring. “I was bedridden for five months.

“I felt like I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t talk and I couldn’t move,” she says. “I thought I was dying.”

In fact, the Canadian star was so ill that her mother had to move in and take care of her while her husband, Chad Kroeger, was on tour.

“There were definitely times I couldn’t shower for a full week because I could barely stand,” she confessed. “It felt like having all your life sucked out of you.”

Lavigne is now feeling much better, and she is very thankful to her fans for all their support over the months, but she also says that her illness has served as a wake-up call.

“This was a wake-up call,” Lavigne explained. “I really just want to enjoy life from here on out.”
