11 Sia ‘Big Girls Cry’ GIFs that explain the brutal stages of a breakup

Sia loves for her songs’ videos to be open to viewers’ interpretation and, to us, “Big Girls Cry” is all about the mentally and emotionally brutal stages of a breakup.

The performer’s newest video once again stars Maddie Ziegler, who at just 12 years old continues to astound us with her ability to so aptly convey the profound feelings that come along with very adult situations, such as addiction (as in the case of “Chandelier”) and delving into one’s own psyche (as in “Elastic Heart”). In “Big Girls Cry,” Ziegler seems to seamlessly take us through the roller coaster ride of the dissolution of a relationship.

While we don’t know for certain what “Big Girls Cry” is about, it certainly looks like how we felt during our last mess of a breakup. Look how Ziegler takes us through all the stages.

1. The calm before the storm

We’ve all felt it: You think everything is going fine in a relationship and then, all of a sudden, it’s not. You can’t put your finger on it, but you know something is wrong and the shit is about to hit the fan.

2. The shock

Even though, deep down, you knew it was coming, the shock of a breakup always smacks you upside the head.

3. The delirium

Before reality sets in after getting dumped (or being the dumpee), we all go a little crazy. Be it through drinking until we can’t feel feelings or just laughing with our friends until our stomach gets sore, the beginning stage of a breakup somehow starts out a little high.

4. The sadness

Once we’re down from our high, our spirits plummet fast and hard. Picturing your life without your former soul mate reduces even the strongest person to a thumb-sucking fetal position.

5. The blame game

Was it my fault? Was it his fault? Am I a total loser? Once we’ve had some time to cry it out, even the best of us start dissecting our relationship, wondering if there was something we could have done differently.

6. The loneliness

In the potato chips, cookie dough and bathrobe stage of a breakup, we’re left wondering if the phone will ever ring again or if we’re destined to be alone forever with our cats.

7. The surge of energy

Otherwise known as the “if you liked it then you should have put a ring on it” phase, you suddenly feel like you can take on the world and are invigorated with your newfound freedom.

8. The relapse

Just when you think you’re getting better, you drink a bottle of wine and drunk dial your ex at 1 a.m.

9. The confusion

After a while, you get to the point where you don’t even know what you’re doing with your life anymore. You wonder how to start over and it’s completely disorienting.

10. Rock bottom

Everyone gets to a breaking point. The good news is, it only goes up from here.

11. Put yourself back together

After hitting rock bottom, you realize you have to punch yourself in the face and get it back together. Everything is going to be A-OK.
