The Duggars speak out against gay rights… again

This should come as a surprise to no one.

Amid a national conversation about Indiana’s new so-called “religious freedom” law and whether it opens the door for businesses to openly discriminate against gays and lesbians, members of the Duggar family have spoken out in support of the legislation.

19 Kids and Counting‘s Josh and Anna Duggar both voiced their support for the law, which has prompted businesses, sports organizations and other celebrities to claim Indiana is intolerant towards the LGBT community.

“Take a stand for religious freedom in Arkansas — join the rally on the State Capitol steps at 12pm today! @FamilyCouncil#RFRA,” Josh wrote on Twitter.

Meanwhile, his wife, Anna, took to Instagram to share a quote from Southern Baptist Convention president, Dr. Ronnie Floyd, saying, “‘Religious liberty must always be preserved for all persons. It is one of the major core values of our country which must never be compromised or distorted in any way. The leaders of our nation must always lift high this founding principle of freedom for all Americans.’ #FreeToBelieve.”

The law has prompted extreme backlash — celebrities including Ellen DeGeneres, Andy Cohen, Bill Maher, Miley Cyrus and Ashley Judd have decried its passage, and indie rock band, Wilco, canceled an upcoming performance in the Hoosier state, saying they might reconsider if the law is repealed.

The Duggars‘ stance created a divide among Twitter users, many of whom were outraged that members of the famous family were — again — speaking publicly against gay rights.

Lawmakers in Indiana amended the law today, adding a clause that specifically states it cannot be used as grounds to discriminate based on sexual orientation or gender identity, but many say only a full repeal will be enough, including Bill Oesterle, CEO of Angie’s List, a company that scrapped plans to expand in Indiana when the law was signed.

“Our position is that this ‘fix’ is insufficient,” Oesterle said. “There was no repeal of RFRA and no end to discrimination of homosexuals in Indiana.”
