Gwyneth Paltrow wants to prove she isn’t jaded

Gwyneth Paltrow is raising awareness for cuts to food assistant programs… by warding off scurvy?

The actress is taking part in a challenge set forth by celebrity chef Mario Batali: She’s going to try to live on a food stamp budget for a week, meaning seven days’ worth of food can’t cost more than $29, or $1.38 per meal.

Paltrow announced her intent to participate on Twitter, first with a photo of her groceries, captioned, “This is what $29 gets you at the grocery store — what families on SNAP (i.e. food stamps) have to live on for a week,” followed by another tweet saying, “We’re walking in their shoes to see how far we get.”

Good for Paltrow for taking part in such an important national debate, but we have to know: Why did she buy so many limes? There are seven in the picture. What’s she going to do with seven limes in a week?

Regardless of how Paltrow chooses to handle her citrus overload, the #FoodBankNYCChallenge is working to raise awareness for 1.7 million New Yorkers who live on food stamps, and big names like Paltrow’s will only help advance the cause.

“Congress cut food stamps twice since 2013, and soup kitchens and food pantries saw an immediate increase in visitors,” the organization says on its website. “New Yorkers can’t afford any cuts to Food Stamps. The #FoodBankNYCChallenge raises hunger awareness and deepens your understanding about the struggle to afford food on a food stamp budget.”

Other celebrities have undergone challenges similar to this one before, and while it’s a noble goal, we’re not sure Paltrow is up for the task — she does, after all insist that her lifestyle company, Goop, isn’t “high end,” despite having items that cost tens of thousands of dollars. Here’s hoping she keeps us updated on her progress (and her favorite lime-based recipes) so we can follow along.
