Everyone has body hair, and it’s time we all accepted that.

Leave it to Miley Cyrus to come roaring into the conversation surrounding women’s hair. The “Wrecking Ball” singer, long known for posting racy selfies on Instagram, snapped another pic of herself in nipple pasties ahead of her gig inducting Joan Jett into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Saturday (see the NSFW pic here).
Cyrus wears pasties in public so often, no one bats an eye anymore, but something else about the photo sparked intense debate in the comments: the singer’s unshaven armpit.
“You forgot to shave under your arm,” one user wrote. “Ew, that’s disgusting!”
Another commented, “Nice #armpithair.”

Cyrus isn’t the first star to buck American style norms and go au naturel under her arms — Scout Willis has been outspoken about letting things grow where they will, and just last month, Madonna shared a selfie that showcased her unshaven underarm.
At least one of Cyrus’ fans was able to see reason.
“It’s body hair,” the user commented on Cyrus’ photo. “We all have it, deal with it.”
Why do so many people have such insane reactions to something as inconsequential as armpit hair? Everyone — male or female — has it. The widespread practice of shaving there is less than 100 years old; before sleeveless dresses and the notion in magazine advertisements that some hair was “objectionable” on women, hairy armpits were the norm. Can’t we all just agree to chalk this one up to personal preference and stop tearing women down if they choose to let it grow?
