Richard Speight Jr. and Rob Benedict have made a name for themselves on the Supernatural convention circuit. Now fans will get a sneak peek into what happens behind the scenes in the upcoming series, Kings of Con.
If you’re a fan of The CW’s hit series and you haven’t availed yourself of the wonder that happens at one of the conventions put on by Creation Entertainment, you are truly missing out. What started out as just your regular, run-of-the-mill convention has become something else entirely, thanks to the cast and creators from the show who turned the conventions into a show of their own.

Leading the troop as the master of ceremonies is Speight, along with Benedict, who leads the “house band” known as Louden Swain. Though the two have only appeared on the show a handful of times between them, they have become megastars on the convention circuit. It’s a unique experience that the two have decided to turn into a single-camera comedy series.
But lest you think that only fans of Supernatural will get the new show, Speight reassures us that’s not the case. He says if the show doesn’t appeal to everyone then they haven’t done their job right.
“The whole point of the show isn’t just for the Supernatural fan base or con fans in general,” Speight said. “It’s really a comedy about two guys. The backdrop is the convention world, but the driving force behind the storytelling and the comedic elements of it are the misadventures of Rob and Rich. The con is the awesome, interesting, unique world to put them in, but wherever they go, the camaraderie and the banter stays the same.”
“Really, when you think about any good sitcom it’s all about the relationships,” Benedict added. “So as much as Rich and I love Supernatural and that whole world, it’s sort of just a starting point for us. [It’s a way] to tell the story about our kooky friendship and how we came together and how are we are together.”
Hardcore fans of Supernatural will have something special in the series as well. “The great thing about the Supernatural fan base is that they will always be in on the joke. Regardless of how many years this show goes on and where the story takes our heroes. The inner circle will always be the Supernatural fandom.”

The conventions boast appearances by the main cast currently appearing on the series, including stars Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Misha Collins and Mark Sheppard. There are also those who may have only appeared on the series a few times, but are still adored by fans to this day, such as Matt Cohen, Osric Chau and many more. Speight and Benedict said all of their cohorts were on board with the idea for the series.
Could that mean appearances by the show’s top stars? The chances look pretty good based on their reactions to the campaign.
“Before we launched the campaign, we showed Jared and Jensen the trailer and they loved it. They were on board from the beginning,” Benedict said.
As for what kinds of situations fans can expect to see the titular kings of con get into in the series, let’s just say there’s a lot for them to pull from. The guys have been taking notes of everything that’s been happening behind the scenes, ready to use all of it in upcoming episodes. The fun part for fans might be figuring out who was involved in the shenanigans for real.
“Just because Rob and I are acting it out, doesn’t mean that it wasn’t Matt [Cohen] or Sebastian [Roche] who did it originally. We are gleefully stealing from people we admire and respect,” Speight said.
“In other words: No one is safe,” Benedict added cryptically.
