During an interview in the May issue of Women’s Health, the actress opened up for the first time about her battle with ovarian cancer and how she privately struggled with it for years.
“I had tumors on both ovaries and the cancer had spread into my lymph nodes and surrounding tissues,” Smulders revealed of her diagnosis, when she was just 25 years old.

Over a period of two years, Smulders has had several surgeries to remove the cancerous tissue, but she doesn’t believe that she will ever be free of it.
“I don’t think I’ll ever feel like I’m cancer-free,” she told the mag. “Now that I’m five years out, I’m trying to think of it as a positive thing and what can I learn from it. And if I can create more awareness, I’ll do it.”

We applaud Smulders for creating awareness of ovarian cancer, because according to Women’s Health magazine, ovarian cancer is the most deadly reproductive cancer, killing around 14,000 women in 2014.
