As Claire quickly reminds Jamie (and us) in this exclusive clip, she’s “not the meek and obedient type.” That can be said for most of the women in Outlander, though — making it a truly gender-forward show, despite the era in which it’s set.
“One of the primary reasons I was so attracted to this role was not just Claire’s strength but the strength of all the female characters,” shares Catriona Balfe (who plays Claire). “What I loved about her was that she’s never a victim. She’s very intelligent. She just seizes every opportunity to live, in whatever circumstances she finds herself in, to the fullest.”

Truer words have never been said of the fictional and feisty Claire Beauchamp. Already this season, we’ve watched her tend to sick and injured men in two different wars, go nose-to-nose with Jack Randall and stand tall against and then beside the oh-so-handsome Jamie Fraser.
As Balfe, the show’s director and the rest of the cast will tell you, though, Claire isn’t the only powerful female character in this brilliant time-jumping period drama from Starz and author Diana Gabaldon. Make sure to watch the video for behind-the-scenes chats with the cast and crew on their favorite ladies. And don’t forget to tune in to Starz on Saturdays to find out what happens next.
