“I am a woman,” Bruce Jenner confirmed after much speculation during his 20/20 interview with Diane Sawyer.
But Jenner’s interview was so much bigger than his gender identification reveal.
(It’s important to note here that Jenner said he would like to continue to be referred to as “Bruce” and with the masculine pronouns “he/him” for the time being. We have respected his wishes as we wrote this article.)
The reveal signified a shift in both the education and the mindset of our society. Jenner is taking center stage to shift the conversation and encourage education and understanding with regards to the LGBT community. Maleness and femaleness is not black and white, and Jenner’s reveal is making that more and more clear when it should have been a reality all along.

The conversation is getting poignantly, beautifully real.
Jenner began Friday night with a lightheartedness — still chock full of the struggle he’s been going through behind his eyes — that set the mood.
“One thing that’s so important in this whole process is we have to keep our sense of humor about this, OK?” the former Olympian told Diane Saywer. “It’s honestly — it’s really pretty funny. Me, of all people, Bruce Jenner, has to deal with these issues. Literally, running away from all of this stuff.”
At this point (the very, very beginning), I was already crying. I wish he could have handed me a few of those tissues through the television.
But as the interview unfolded, it turned from heartbreaking to inspiring in a way that touched the very core of me, and the world seemed to be right with me.

The good vibes and positivity radiated from my laptop in a way that I’ve never seen. For this night, the hate seemed to be brushed aside and all that was left was a deep understanding that we are humans and Jenner needs human compassion right now. And so Twitter rose to the occasion, for maybe the first time ever — if not the first, then definitely the most meaningful.
The Kardashian/Jenner clan all watched the interview together, and their reactions brought such humanity and realism to the entire experience that, for a moment, the reality stars lost their glitz and glam and simply became people. People we can all relate to, because they’re supporting their family. And they’re going through this experience together with love and respect for every family member.
And maybe most important of all, Jenner realizes the impact his big interview will have on the world, and it was one of the driving motivations behind his coming out and self-acceptance.

“What I’m doing is going to do some good,” he explained. “And we’re going to change the world.”
And Jenner started doing just that Friday night, already spreading love and positive energy to people who need it as well as finding that love and happiness within himself.
“My whole life has prepared me for this moment,” Jenner said.
