As the night dwindled down at the 42nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, the question on everyone’s mind remained: Who will take home top honors for Outstanding Drama Series? And, well, the answer was a bit of a shocker.
The winner was not one show… but two. That’s right, folks — the night’s biggest award will be shared between Days of Our Lives and The Young and the Restless.

It’s a move that is nearly unprecedented (Y&R tied with Guiding Light back in 2007) during the show’s more than four-decade span. It’s also a move that fans were not exactly fond of.
I mean really they should have just given everyone a Participation Ribbon and called it a night. #DaytimeEmmys a tie? Smh.

The tie should have been General Hospital & DAYS if a tie was necessary. #DaytimeEmmys obviously I will always choose #DAYS

When there are four nominees and only four Daytime dramas a tie in Best Drama Series is stupid #DaytimeEmmys

Not that both shows didn’t deserve the accolades, but seriously, what’s with the indecision? As so many viewers tweeted, could it really be that tricky to pick just one when there are only four nominees to begin with?
But, naturally, it just wouldn’t be a solid controversy without a few conspiracy theories thrown into the mix to explain away this award show shocker.

For starters, the production company for both winners is Sony Pictures, which has been deeply beleaguered since last year’s crippling e-mail hack. Conspiracy theorists want to know: Could these wins be a ploy to restore some modicum of credibility to the once-monolithic production company?
Or is it simply happenstance that of the four nominees, the two winners share the same production company — and that production company happens to be Sony Pictures?
A more plausible theory could be that the tie is meant to underscore that soap operas are not dead. Since 2009, the soap world has lost programming that was once sought after, such as Guiding Light, As the World Turns, One Life to Live and All My Children.

Throughout the 42nd Annual Daytime Emmys, host Tyra Banks, presenters and award winners talked about the resiliency of the industry, insisting it isn’t dead and, in fact, it isn’t in danger of dying because of the support of the shows’ fans.
So, perhaps the powers that be theorized crowning two victors for the night’s biggest honor would solidify their message of strength and solidarity — a sort of “Soaps are doing so well, we can’t even choose one winner!”
Granted, it is altogether possible that the truth is far simpler. Maybe when the score were tabulated, Y&R and Days truly did just end up with the same number of check marks.
While can’t be 100 percent certain, we feel pretty confident fans will be buzzing about this tie for weeks to come.
