Spoiler alert: Do NOT continue reading unless you know or are ready to know all the tragic, unbelievable, mind-blowing events of the most recent episode of Grey’s Anatomy. (P.S. If you’ve managed to avoid social media for this long, I’m impressed.)

Many fans still haven’t gotten over McDreamy’s (Patrick Dempsey) untimely death on the show, and Pompeo wants fans to know she’s right there with you.

The star of the show took to her Instagram to explain why this journey was a necessary one for Meredith Grey (aka Mrs. McDreamy).

Dempsey also took to Twitter following his character’s death on the show in a fatal car wreck last Thursday.

He also insisted that, despite rumors, he was not leaving the show because there was a feud between himself and the show’s creator and executive producer, Shonda Rhimes.

Rhimes also chimed in in a statement: “Derek Shepherd is and will always be an incredibly important character — for Meredith, for me and for the fans. I absolutely never imagined saying goodbye to our ‘McDreamy.’

“His loss will be felt by all,” Rhimes continued. “Now, Meredith and the entire Grey’s Anatomy family are about to enter uncharted territory as we head into this new chapter of her life. The possibilities for what may come are endless. As Ellis Grey would say… the carousel never stops turning.”
