Fifty Shades Darker has another teaser trailer — and yep, still lame

In April of 2015, Universal Pictures released the first official teaser trailer for Fifty Shades Darker. Normally that would have had me super pumped. Except — and it was a big “except” — the movie wasn’t set for release for almost another two years.

“Are you ready for something darker?” asks the trailer, which is included in the Fifty Shades of Grey DVD extras.

Why, yes, yes I am. Too bad I have to wait until Feb. 10, 2017.

The trailer starts and ends with Jamie Dornan as Christian Grey doing the opposite of what he does best. He’s putting clothes on. And his wardrobe is capped with a black masquerade mask. “Fifty Shades Darker coming to theaters,” the last image told us. But they didn’t include the release date because, well, obviously it was a major letdown.

Then in 2016, Universal Pictures decided to remind Fifty Shades of Grey fans that they hadn’t forgotten about them by revealing yet another teaser trailer for Fifty Shades Darker on Monday, Sept. 12. The trailer has been out for only a day, and it has already been viewed close to a million times (currently at 996,519 views), but our thoughts about this trailer and the previous teaser remain much the same — we’re underwhelmed.

It starts off with fireworks (we’re not even talking about the kind you get in the bedroom, just plain old lights-in-the-sky type fireworks) before showing us a box of what looks to be red lingerie, while the text across the screen reads: “Tomorrow, slip into something a shade darker.”

You then get to see Jamie Dornan (as Christian Grey) and Dakota Johnson (as Anastasia Steele) together for less than a second before the frame changes to Johnson donning a masquerade mask. Um, OK. Is this it? Is this all you’re giving us, Universal Pictures?

I appreciate that Universal is trying to keep the anticipation high until the 2017 release, but this is too much of a tease without any of the payoff. I’d rather just re-watch Fifty Shades of Grey.

Last year, Universal’s chairwoman, Donna Langley, promised us some excitement when she said that the sequel will be “more of a thriller” than the first film. And if you’ve read the books, you know what she means. There’s lots more intrigue and scandal as the love story between Anna and Christian grows, but right now, we don’t have a lot to look forward to.

Just sayin’.

Do you think the Fifty Shades Darker teaser is a letdown?
