In a move that ruined pretty much everyone’s night, Fox has canceled The Mindy Project.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Mindy Kaling‘s romantic comedy series, which has a huge cult following but consistently brought low ratings to the network — historically a problem for smart comedies, like Parks and Rec and 30 Rock — won’t be back for a fourth season. Its third season wrapped last month.
Kaling has yet to comment directly on the news, but she did post this mysterious message on her Instagram account.

For fans of the show, though, all hope is not lost — according to EW, the show’s producer, Universal Television, is trying hard to get a deal with Hulu for not just another season, but multiple. Hulu already has streaming rights to all of The Mindy Project’s past episodes, so the on-demand service seems like a natural fit if the show is going to get a second chance.
The Mindy Project debuted in September of 2012 to positive reviews from critics. The writing was lauded for being smart and insightful, but the show failed to capture large audiences. It was the center of a number of controversies, too, from critics who said it represented a damaging portrayal of women of color.
