Scant details have been released about Doctor Who‘s upcoming Season 9, but we do know a few things. Along with an awesome list of guest stars, one of our favorite foes will return to taunt the doctor. Ready for more Zygons?
More:Is this show crossover inevitable?
With so many Doctor Who enemies and frenemies, it’s sometimes hard to keep up with all the crazy creatures lurking in our universe (and beyond). Let’s face it, unless they’re Cybermen, Daleks or the adorable Adipose, it’s nearly impossible to keep track of the names for all the fish-faced, leathery-skinned, potato-shaped aliens the Doctor keeps tabs on. We know the Zygons are returning, but how much do you really know about them? Here’s a refresher.
1) Their debut
Zygons first appeared in 1975 in “Terror of the Zygons,” a four-part series involving the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker). They showed up on Earth in an attempt to find a new home planet after theirs was destroyed. Needless to say, the Doctor didn’t let that happen.

2) They’re connected to the Loch Ness Monster
During that same series, the Doctor and Sarah Jane go in search of the Zygons and end up tracking the signal to Loch Ness. Turns out the monster was a Skarasen, whose lactation is what the Zygons have been surviving on.
3) They mostly disappeared for the next several Doctors
After their first appearance, Zygons took a backseat for a while, going virtually unmentioned during the next six doctors. That was, until the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith) came along. Still, they only earned a brief mention in the episode “The Pandorica Opens” as one of the many species that joined the alliance hoping to end the Doctor.
4) And then they reemerged
Thankfully, the Ponds seemed to stir up plenty of the Doctor’s enemies. In the episode “The Power of Three,” the Doctor takes Amy and Rory to the Savoy Hotel for their first anniversary. While there, they learn that the Zygons’ ship is under the hotel and they’re currently running the entire hotel in human form.
5) They’ve met two other Doctors, too
In “The Day of the Doctor,” Zygons are the enemy once again and it takes a bunch of time-line crossing from several regenerations of the Doctor to try to defeat them. In Elizabethan England, the Zygons come face-to-face with Eleven, Twelve and the War Doctor.
