We got the scoop about The Vampire Diaries Season 6 finale from Chris Wood who plays Kai, and let’s just say, it’s about to go down.
And, according to Wood, it’s not in the way we expected.

“I think the way that they end the season is gorgeous and disturbing and sad and fantastic,” the actor shared. “It’s bloody, it’s lovely and it’s going to be different. It’s not something the fans are necessarily prepared for.”
Which, of course, has us nervous.
But the fact that we aren’t going to necessarily expect the ending could also be a good thing, since we’re expecting Elena (Nina Dobrev) to die. Or come to some other horrible demise.
Which Wood didn’t exactly say wasn’t a possibility. “There’s going to be a big body count,” he said of the season finale. Also adding that it’s “so bloody. Like, the most blood on set I’ve seen. And I spent the season covered in blood if we all remember. The finale is the bloodiest that I’ve seen. It’s sort of just an ongoing onslaught.”
But there’s a silver lining to all of the horror to come.
“It’s very emotional, what with the lead of the show leaving,” Wood continued. “It’s going to be big. It’s going to shake up the whole series that there’s a different energy and this story about brothers is, sort of, going to emerge. And I think it’s healthy to have change.”

That’s something to definitely take note of: Season 7 is going to be the season of the brothers, which I think is definitely a beautiful way to end the show since it’s a different kind of love than most story lines focus on.
“The finale, honestly, is so good,” Wood assured us. “The finale is so good. Those scenes were really, really exciting. It’s a big episode. The tension of the whole season leads us to those moments. We get a Bonnie and Kai standoff, which has sort of been coming the whole season, where they’re going to really duke it out and it’s huge and it’s epic and it’s fantastic. Getting to shoot that was great.”
As for whether Kai could ever be redeemed, especially in Bonnie’s eyes, Wood seemed to think there was some hope, “He’s not necessarily beyond repair but I think it’s going to take a miracle to get Kai back from this hyper-villainous state.”
But we’ve seen bigger miracles happen on the show. If Damon could turn good, why not Kai? And Wood thinks Bonnie might be the witch up for the challenge if any of the girls on the show were to catch Kai’s heart.
“She was the first thing he saw,” Wood explained. “I think he was so thrown by the fact that she hated him so much and then she seemed like she was trying to work out whether or not she could trust him, and I think that’s interesting to him and he likes challenges. And he’s attracted to conflict, obviously.”

But in order to see Wood’s character evolve into a good guy, we definitely need to see him in Season 7. So is he returning? Or are the rumors that he’s leaving the show true?
Wood said don’t be swayed by rumors that he’s not coming back for Season 7 just yet, “No one knows anything,” he promised. But that also means we’ll just have to wait to see if Kai makes it out of the finale onslaught alive.
The Season 6 finale of The Vampire Diaries airs next Thursday on The CW.
