Serious question: Is Dancing With the Stars a dancing competition or what? We genuinely don’t know the answer to that question.
You see, we’ve had our doubts in the past, but after tonight’s elimination, we really are confused about the point of the show. If it were actually a dancing competition, then it stands to reason that Nastia Liukin and her pro partner, Derek Hough, would be competing in the finale next week, rather than Noah Galloway and his pro partner, Sharna Burgess.

Don’t get us wrong, we love Noah. We have nothing but the utmost respect for what he has overcome in his life. His participation in this competition has made us admire him even more so, and his determination to succeed and improve each week is a wonderful lesson in perseverance. Plus, he’s a total sweetheart who makes us swoon with his obvious love and adoration for his girlfriend, who he made his fiancée just last night.
So, as a person, we think Noah is the cream of the crop. Truly. But as a dancer, Noah is not at the level required of someone who is taking part in the finale. Despite Noah’s determination to succeed on the dance floor, he still doesn’t come close to matching the abilities of Rumer, Nastia or Riker. In terms of winning our hearts, Noah is leading the pack. When it comes to winning a dancing competition, Noah does not have the skills to pay the bills. But Nastia certainly did, so we can certainly understand if she is just as confused as we are about the purpose of the whole show.

We don’t want to hate on America’s support of the underdog because there is nothing we love more than someone who isn’t rated as having a shot in hell ending up on top. But usually when an underdog wins something, it’s because they’ve genuinely beaten the competition. And that’s not the case with Noah. He is still in the competition because he has the sympathy vote on lock, not because he’s actually succeeding at the dancing part. Not to mention, the judges seem to overlook a lack of quality — and sometimes quantity — in his dancing, which seems a little unfair to the skilled dancers who have previously been blasted by the judges for dances that were far less flawed than those we’ve seen from Noah.
Before you go thinking we are unfeeling and unsympathetic people, let us point out that we aren’t the only ones who aren’t cool with Noah making it this far on something other than dancing merit. People are less than jazzed that Derek and Nastia won’t be in the finale and, as always, Twitter was an outlet for their rage.
You have got to be KIDDING ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! @NastiaLiukin and @DerekHough are done???? I am SO SAD!!!! #DWTS

Wow – absolute shame that Noah got thru to finals. Seriously wrong. It is amazing what he did .. but just not as good as others. #dwts

#DWTS Noah won a personality contest not a dancing contest. Maybe there should be two awards???

Noah saving himself by proposing last night… I am NOT amused. He should have been eliminated tonight. #sympathyvotes#dwts

So, it seems ABC and the voting public really does need to decide whether this is a dancing competition or a popularity contest, because it’s pretty clear the show cannot be both, and it’s significantly unfair to those dancing couples who go into the competition thinking it’s about how well they dance, only to get eliminated at the final hurdle in favor of someone who is a phenomenally wonderful person but not at all an impressive dancer.
