The Bold and the Beautiful transgender story gets strong reaction from fans

The Bold and the Beautiful fans have known Maya’s deepest secret for a while now, but on Friday she’ll finally come clean to her husband-to-be. Karla Mosley (who plays Maya) opened up about this groundbreaking move from the soap.

More:Their LGBT story line is a bold step for TV

For those of you who haven’t kept up with The Bold and the Beautiful, prepare to be let in on a big secret: Maya is transgender. Viewers have known Maya’s truth for a while now. However, she’s avoided telling most of her loved ones… including her fiancé, Rick Forrester (Jacob Young). Before they can tie the knot, Maya needs to share her secret with the love of her life and she’ll do it on this Friday’s episode.

People magazine spoke with Mosley and got the inside scoop on how she prepared for the story line and the responses she’s gotten from fans. She’s gotten mostly praise for her role and for the soap’s tackling of a story line that desperately needs a place in pop culture.

“The fans have been incredible. Every day I receive more and more comments from people whose hearts are opening to Maya and her story,” she told People. “They say things like, ‘I’m learning things about trans people and it’s making me think about that community in a way I hadn’t before.’ Or, ‘I’ve always disliked Maya,’ — because Maya is a character we love to hate — ‘but my heart is breaking for her. I hope Rick and Maya stay together.’ The positive responses far outweigh anything else and that makes me feel hopeful and humbled.”

Mosley also shared that she’s most excited to see the episode be syndicated so fans everywhere can witness the groundbreaking story line.

“We play in over 100 countries and I can’t wait to hear from fans all over the world as Maya’s truth is revealed,” Mosley said. “It’s a beautiful story, and I’m so proud of the way our show is choosing to tell it.”

We can’t wait to see how they react, too.
