Melissa McCarthy blasts Hollywood sexism in brilliant interview

An increasing number of actresses are calling out the sexism that still exists in Hollywood, and Melissa McCarthy is the latest to add her voice to the cause.

McCarthy is married to Ben Falcone and the pair has been working on Michelle Darnell, which Falcone is directing and McCarthy is starring in, as they did with the 2014 film Tammy. Tammy’s reviews were less than complimentary, and a lot of the comments were directed at McCarthy’s appearance — but lucky for her, she got revenge on one of her critics.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, McCarthy revealed how last September she came face-to-face with a critic who had written a scathing review about her appearance in Tammy.

“Are you the one who wrote I was only a good actor when I looked more attractive and that my husband should never be allowed to direct me because he allowed me to look so homely?” she asked him. When he admitted that she was, she said, “Would you say that to any guy?”

“When John C. Reilly — or any actor — is playing a character that is depressed and dejected, would you say, ‘Well, you look terrible!’?” she asked the critic.

McCarthy then went on to ask him if he had a daughter, and when she discovered that he did, she told him, “Watch what you say to her. Do you tell her she’s only worthwhile or valid when she’s pretty?”

Some powerful words. McCarthy also shed light on the sexism that exists in Hollywood and the horrible double standards for male and female actors.

“It’s an intense sickness,” she said of the sexism. “For someone who has two daughters, I’m wildly aware of how deep that rabbit hole goes. But I just don’t want to start listening to that stuff. I’m trying to take away the double standard of, ‘You’re an unattractive bitch because your character was not skipping along in high heels.'”
