Cate Blanchett sets the record straight about her sexuality after ‘coming out’

Remember when Cate Blanchett nonchalantly said she had (many) relationships with women and we all fell in love with her just a little bit more?

Because she is drop-dead gorg and all around brilliant.

Well, that didn’t seem to be the whole, or 100 percent correct, story. She cleared up the confusion about her sexuality comments by basically telling everyone to just get over it.

“From memory, the conversation ran, ‘Have you had relationships with women?’ And I said, ‘Yes, many times. If you mean I’ve had sexual relationships with women, the answer is, ‘no.” But that obviously didn’t make it to print,” she said.

Then she laid down the law, saying, “But in 2015, the point should be, ‘Who cares?'”

Indeed, Cate, indeed.

She explained exactly why it shouldn’t matter and tells us that we have a lot of work left to do on the sexual orientation front, saying, “What happens these days is if you are homosexual you have to talk about it constantly. We are living in deeply conservative times, if we think otherwise we are very foolish.”

I’m completely with Blanchett on this one. You may initially think she is being priggish, but that’s not the case. What she is saying is it still matters to our society what your sexual orientation is, and it just plain shouldn’t matter at all.

It shouldn’t matter if you are attracted to men or women or both! People are not defined by the gender of their significant other, so it shouldn’t be something any sexual orientation should have to discuss.

Then she turned the tables to discuss something of much more merit: the number of film roles for women.

“I think it needs to be the center of conversation… The more rich and diverse the stories are the better it serves audiences both male and female. I think it fell off the agenda and lost a lot of ground. But it’s wonderful to work with female producers who want to make great, intelligent films.”

Blanchett was at the Cannes Film Festival promoting her latest film, Carol.
