George Takei thinks Marvel should take some advice from Taylor Swift, and I couldn’t agree more.

The Star Trek actor took to Twitter to voice his opinion about Swift’s new music video and explain why the comic book giant should take note.
Taylor Swift released her much anticipated video Bad Blood starring girl celebs as action stars. Come on Marvel, T. Swift is showing you up.

And I couldn’t agree more with his advice.
Of course, Marvel has started the transition and has done an amazing job of making its comic book superheroes more diverse in the last year. But now it’s time to take that transition to the big screen.
While we have strong female characters in the Marvel films, like Black Widow, we have yet to see a female superhero headline a Marvel film. And it’s overdue.

Supergirl is coming to CBS this fall, starring Melissa Benoist in the title role, so ladies are definitely making headway in superhero story lines. I would even go so far as to say television is the more creative space for those changes to start, anyway, given the diversity we’re seeing crop up across cable and network stations.
It’s an exciting time for women and minorities being represented in entertainment, but we need to continue to further that change in positive ways until women are getting as equal screen time as men, whether they’re fighting crime or acting as the criminals.
No longer can studios claim that women don’t sell as well as an excuse for why they’re underrepresented. Swift’s video has garnered over 25 million views since it first aired just two days ago. That’s better than the vast majority of films do at the box office in their first weekend.

Takei is completely right that Swift’s video represents all the potential strong female leads have and I, personally, can’t wait to see it in the very near future.
