So You Think You Can Dance judges spill on Season 12’s major twist (VIDEO)

Season 12 of So You Think You Can Dance is bringing something we’ve never seen before.

In the just-released Fox sneak peek, the judges explained that in the new season, contestants will be split into two separate categories: street dancers and stage dancers.

“We’re looking for the top 10 stage dancers, which includes tap, ballroom, ballet, contemporary and the top 10 street dancers — salsa, street, tango and, of course, all the hip-hop,” show creator, Nigel Lythgoe, explained. “Then we join them together and all hell’s gonna break loose.”

On previous seasons, contestants have all faced off together from the beginning, no matter the style of dance they specialize in. No word yet how multiply trained dancers will be categorized. Perhaps they’ll get to choose the style they feel strongest about?

“There’s rules to both sides,” singer and new judge, Jason Derulo, said, “and there’s rules to be broken on both sides. You have to bring your A game every single time.”

The third judge joining the team this season will be former American Idol judge, Paula Abdul, who knows what it takes to be a star performer. “If you come in here and the bar’s up here, you either have to beat that or you have to be brave and kinda step outside of the norm,” she explained.

And Lythgoe points out that the standard of dance continues to rise, setting that bar pretty high.
