5-year-old Miles Scott had a dream: to help save the world like his biggest hero, Batman. With the help of social media and the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Miles achieved his dream and it’s now the subject of a fascinating new documentary, Batkid Begins: The Wish Heard Around the World.
Directed by Dana Nachman, Batkid Begins: The Wish Heard Around the World tells the true story of a young boy, Miles Scott, who was diagnosed with lymphoblastic leukemia when he was only 18 months old.

Wanting to have the superhero experience and help others in need, Miles’ dream was to be Batman for a day. Of course, it made more sense for him to be Batkid, since he was only 5 years old and would get the opportunity to work with Batman. Soon, his dream became the largest, most involved Make-A-Wish Foundation event ever created.
With the help of city officials, the Make-A-Wish Foundation recreated Gotham City in San Francisco, and millions of people, including President Obama, turned to Twitter and Facebook to support Batkid, using hashtags #SFBatKid and #BatKid. Even the San Francisco Chronicle printed the headline, “Batkid Saves City: Hooded hero nabs Riddler, rescues damsel in distress.”

Miles was told by his family that he was simply going on a trip to San Francisco to pick up a Batman costume for him to wear. Imagine Miles’ surprise when, watching TV in his family’s hotel room, he saw a news report from San Francisco police chief Greg Suhr asking for the help of Batkid.
Miles’ little brother got in on the adventure, dressed as sidekick Robin. The rest of the day included riding in a Batmobile with police escorts, saving a damsel in distress and foiling the Riddler’s attempt to rob a bank.
What’s so inspiring about this story is not only how it affected little Miles, but how it touched the millions of people who participated, tweeted and supported this kid’s dream.

We can thank Miles’ difficult journey for bringing out the best in humanity in a time when this kind of love and positivity is certainly needed.
