Earlier this month, Johnny Depp made headlines for smuggling his Yorkshire Terriers, Boo and Pistol, into Australia, where he discovered just how seriously Australia takes its quarantine laws.
Depp never declared his dogs’ presence when he flew into Australia on his private jet — he is currently there filming Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales — and after pictures of the pooches surfaced online, Australia’s Minister for Agriculture, Barnaby Joyce, threatened to euthanize the dogs unless they were flown out of the country within 50 hours.
The Mortdecai actor’s legal headache is not over, either, because reports are now claiming that he could face up to 10 years in jail for his actions. According to E! News, an Australian Senate committee was told on Monday that if the case goes to court and Depp is found guilty, he could either face a maximum fine of $265,000 or 10 years in prison.

And given how serious Mr. Joyce was about the matter, it’s unlikely that all will just be forgotten. The Guardian also reports that officials have referred to the case as “very serious.”
Joyce previously gave an interview with Australia’s ABC radio where he said, “If we start letting movie stars — even though they’ve been the Sexiest Man Alive twice — to come into our nation [and break the laws], then why don’t we just break the laws for everybody?
“It’s time that Pistol and Boo buggered off back to the United States,” he added.

The fact that he gave the dogs 50 hours to live created quite a stir, but he seemed unfazed by his comments and even took to social media to inform everyone when Depp’s dogs were finally gone.
